Nine students from a particular college in Mumbai approached the Bombay High Court to challenge the new circular of the concerned college which instructs students to refrain from wearing any clothing that may represent their religious affiliations.
A Division Bench of Justices AS Chandurkar and Rajesh Patil is likely to hear the plea on June 18.
The issue in contention is that by virtue of being a college, affiliated with Mumbai University and aided by the State of Maharashtra, it has no power and authority to issue directions giving out such restrictions. This is the second such case, that gained national spotlight after the decision of the Karnataka High Court in which it upheld the ban on Hijab.
