Minimum Stipend for Junior Lawyers
The Madras High Court has mandated a minimum stipend to junior lawyers of a minimum of 20,000 for junior lawyers in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, and 15,000 for junior lawyers in other districts of the state. A two-judge bench comprising of, Justice S. M. Subramaniam and Justice C. Kumarappan[1], delivered the judgement.
The court order came after a writ petition filed by Farida Begam, Represented by Advocate C.Elangovan. The petition advocated for equal benefits under the Advocates’ Welfare Fund Act, 2001[2] for lawyers in Puducherry like the lawyers in Tamil Nadu.
The court also emphasized that the minimum stipend to junior lawyers should be paid, without any gender discrimination. They directed the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry to issue circulars to all bar associations within four weeks[3].
